What is a Clay Bar?
While it might look like that stuff you used back in grade school to make a Father’s Day present for your dad, an auto detailing clay bar is an elastic resin compound that has been scientifically engineered to lift contaminants off of your vehicle. Even if you don’t see a lot of debris, just run your hand over your newly washed vehicle, and you might feel some areas that are rough or even gritty. It’s not just on the painted areas, but also the glass, metal, plastic, and other surfaces found on the exterior of your car or truck.
Whether you have a lot of experience working with cars or products found at your local auto parts store in Fall River or not, this is a job that can be done easily by beginners. Just know that it can take about two hours to complete the work by hand and it cannot be started and left unfinished for any reason. Don’t start this project unless you have all of the tools, products, and time necessary to get the job done right. Read the instructions for the clay bar carefully and make sure that you have everything you need so you won’t have to run to our auto repair and parts store in Fall River during the process.
Step One: Wash and dry your vehicle thoroughly before using a clay bar. If possible, apply the clay bar inside of a garage, under a carport, or another sheltered and shaded spot for best results.
Step Two: Open up the product and take a look at the contents inside. The clay bar will be about the size of a bar of soap. Just tear off a chunk from the side of the bar to use, while keeping the rest of the bar inside of an airtight bag or a container. Some brands include a container that looks similar to a travel soapbox that is designed to protect the product.
Step Three: Start by squeezing and kneading the clay in your hands to get it primed and ready to use. Choose a single section on your vehicle to work on at a time. The clay bar should have come with a detailing lubricant. Make sure to spray it on generously to the area that you will be cleaning before you start to use the clay bar product.
Step Four: The best way to use the clay bar is to move it back and forth against the surface area of the vehicle. Don’t press too hard; just use a bit of gentle pressure. If the clay will not move effectively along the surface, spray a bit more lubricant on your vehicle and try again. Once you finish the area that you are working on, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the area dry. Check the paint to see if it feels smooth. If there is still a rough, bumpy, gritty surface in that area, start over again until it is smooth.
Step Five: Once you have completed a section of the vehicle and area satisfied with results, look at the clay to see how it has held up to the cleaning process. If there is a lot of dirt, dust, debris, tar, or other contaminants built up on the piece of clay, you can stretch it out and knead it again until it looks fresh and new again. If you cannot find a clean spot, go ahead and tear off a brand new piece. A new clay bar should be able to provide you with detailed cleaning like this for up to four vehicles or four complete services.
Step Six: Repeat the process until the entire vehicle has been cleaned. Go over it once again to check for any bumpy or gritty areas on the surface and re-clean them, if necessary.
Step Seven: Prepare to put on a fresh coat of wax once the job is complete. In addition to removing dirt, grime, dead bugs, road tar, and other debris, the clay bar that you purchase at our auto parts store in Fall River will also remove any wax that has been previously applied. Before you drive your vehicle anywhere or subject it to UV rays, rain, snow, or any other type of weather, you need to apply a fresh coat of wax to protect the paint.
